Pressure Filter - supine

This filter is located on the line supplying the rotary actuator. It is equipped with an electronic indicator to signal a clogged filter element.

Part Number: Moog Industrial Controls Division HP020 (discontinued)

Replace the filter element when the Filter Status Module indicates to do so.

If oil drips from where the filter bowl joins the head try replacing the O-ring. If that fails purchase a seal kit. (See below.)

Filter Element

The correct filter element needs to be re-evaluated the next time that this piece needs to be replaced. (It is not critical to do so at the moment since the pump has a 3-micron absolute filter on the supply line. The text bellow summarizes the history and the problem.)

The filter element was replaced in 2001. At the time, the part number found on the filter element was Moog #071-60176. A genuine repacement part is not longer availble. As such, MCS Servo supplied us with the following substitute: Behringer Fluid Systems part BE9021M/8-12A (12 micron absolute.)

However, documentation was then found in the lab indicating that Moog recommends the use of a 3-micron absolute filter (Moog filter element #071-60645) for the servo valve. It is not clear why a coarser filter was installed; some used 3-micron elements (#071-60645) were found in the lab.

Changing the filter element

  1. Unscrew the aluminum bowl (housing) and remove the filter that remains hanging from the head. (Be aware that there is fluid in bowl.)
  2. Remove the new filter from its box and carefully slit the plastic around the top. (To avoid filter damage, do not slit the plastic over the filter element! )
  3. Install by pressing the mating surfaces together and seating the O-ring assembly.
  4. Re-install the aluminum bowl and tighten firmly by hand. (Do not use any tools to tighten the bowl.)

Notes:

  • Do NOT put the filter in the bowl and then screw onto the head. This is a recipe for disaster as the O-ring may never mate properly and fluid will happily flow around the filter rather than through it.
  • Any time you replace a filter, you MUST flush the system (stage 2 at least) before use.

O-Ring

The O-ring between the filter head and the bowl is universal standard size 136, Buna-N. (See this sizing chart for specification.) (Check stock. A bag of 100 was purchased in 2006.)

Seal Kit

One may also purchase a kit to seal the bowl from the head. (The kit contains an O-ring and some kind of teflon back-up. Contact MCS Servo.)
