Locations

EMGS are measured from the gastrocnemius-soleus (GS) muscle group (also known as the triceps surae) and from the tibialis anterior (TA). The TA electrode is placed lateral to the femur - at about a third of the distance from the kneecap to the lateral malleolus. The GS electrode is placed on the lateral head of the gastrocnemius - superior to its inferior border. Both electrodes are placed parallel to the muscle fibre orientation, resulting in the contact bars being perpendicular to the muscle fibre for maximum signal detection. As confirmation, the arrow on the Delsys electrode casing should be parallel to the muscle fibre orientation. A reference (ground) electrode is placed on the patella.
