Normally-closed solenoid, Asco
Part Number: 8210G95-120/60 (2 way, 3/4 NPT)
This solenoid was added in series with the thermostatic valve on the
HPU because it was realized that there is no point in letting cooling
water flow after the HPU is turned off. Only the return line is cooled.
If the reservoir oil temperature is warm enough to open the thermostatic
valve the resulting water flow would not provide cooling in the absence
of oil flow (i.e., when the pump is off.) Hence, with a warm reservoir,
and without the solenoid, the thermostatic valve would only waste water
until ambient air cooled the reservoir oil to the point where the valve
would shut off.
The solenoid has to be energized at the same time as the electric motor
on the HPU so that the cooling system is operational when the pump is
running. (To that end, the solenoid is wired in parallel with the dump
valve.)
